MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry is one of the latest and most fascinating new developments in the analysis of organic compounds. Originally developed for the analysis of biomolecules, it has developed into one of the most powerful techniques for the characterization of synthetic polymers. This book describes the fundamentals of the MALDI process and the technical features of MALDI-TOF instrumentation. It reviews the application of MALDI-TOF for identification, chemical and molar mass analysis of synthetic polymers. Experimental protocols for the determination of endgroups, the analysis of homo- and copolymers, and the coupling of liquid chromatography and MALDI-TOF are discussed in detail.

This book presents fundamentals of one of the well-recognized mass spectrometry techniques, matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time of fl ight mass spec- trometry (MALDI-ToF-MS). The most direct way to optimize mass spectral analysis of polymers has led to exploring new matrices, solvents, and ionizing agents. Since the first reports of the application of MALDI for synthetic polymer analysis [], significant advances in sample preparation protocols and instrumentation development have been taken place.
The final chapter provides a valuable overview of potential future trends and developments in MALDI-TOF MS and assesses the impact of the technology in Codes: SCI, MED, SCI, SCIBIC Codes: MMFM, PSG, PNFSThema notation: MKFM, MZMP, PSG, PNFSKeywords: MALDI-TOF,mass spectrometry, diagnostic laboratory. and synthetic polymers is in the ionization process. For protein/pep-tide MALDI analysis, most samples are ionized through protonation; for synthetic polymer MALDI experiments most samples are ionized by cationization. Some polymers, such as polyethylene glycols and polymethylmeth-acylate form ions with alkali metals (added to the sample or simply.

Time-of-flight (TOF) mass separation [] is the technique most often applied to synthetic polymers due to their high molecular masses, typically in excess of u and often much greater (into the u range and beyond). No other mass separation technique can reach such high masses. The TOF signal, s(t i), is collected on equal intervals of time.
